Forklift Fails and How to Avoid Them!

Many large companies out there use forklifts to smoothly run some of their operations. Given how important this large piece of machinery is to so many industries, it is critical to carry out daily checks and set-up a thorough maintenance plan so as to avoid forklifts fails.

A lot of people might think that performing a routine maintenance check is both time and resource consuming. But the truth is, you will likely spend more time and money trying to repair a damaged forklift or replacing materials which have been destroyed because of a forklift fail. Not to talk about the dangers which a malfunctioning forklift can pose to your crew. Below are some common forklift fails and how you can avoid them;

  1. Problems with the lift
    Given the function of a forklift, any lift problem can really affect the efficiency of your work. If the mast of your forklift is moving in an erratic manner or it is not raising or lowering properly, it is most likely a hydraulic system problem. Check if there is a clog in the system or the level of the hydraulic fluid (might be low). You should also check the maximum weight which the forklift can carry because an overload can lead to the engine overheating.
  2. Brake failure
    The damages caused by a brake failure could be devastating and can even lead to deadly workplace accidents. The best way to avoid such a problem is to respect your forklift maintenance schedule. You can, for example, test your brakes on a daily basis. This could help you to identify any malfunction early on. You should also change rotors and pads when they become worn, so as to avoid more expensive damages.
  3. Hose problems
  4. Cracked or broken hoses can make your forklift unavailable for use for a long time. You will also have to spend a lot of money to get them repaired. You can detect weakening hoses before they crack through a good forklift maintenance. Replacing them on time can also help to avoid damage to other parts of the forklift.
  1. Tires
    A bit similar to cars, you need to check the tires of your forklift on a regular basis. Driving a forklift with worn tires can lead to other forklift fails like damaged suspension. This needs to be avoided because your suspension needs to be in good condition in order to handle the heavy loads.
